10 Things To Avoid In Your Cover Letter

Like it or not, your cover letter is the first document that creates an impression about you (good or bad). Because first impressions really count, you need to take a careful approach to writing cover letters in order to avoid rejection. Here are the 10 major don’ts you need to avoid:



1. Don’t use cover letter templates, however good they may be. There are three things you must know that go against these templates: 1) they are stale & boring 2) most templates are likely to have been downloaded from internet 3) therefore, yours will be exposed as being identical to many. Use samples to get ideas on how to write your own unique letter.



2. Don’t write a lengthy first paragraph that will only bore the reader. A lengthy first paragraph also dilutes your impressive qualities and eventually weakens the entire letter - this is the last thing you want to happen.



3. Don’t exclude your Unique Selling Proposition, or USP. Remember that the cover letter is your sales letter; you should highlight your main strengths and prepare the reader psychologically to want to read further.



4. Don’t write a vague letter without mentioning specifics, such as the job title and job code/number if you are responding to an advertisement.



5. Don’t address your cover letter ‘To Whom It May Concern’. It shows that you don’t care enough to do your research to find out who is receiving the resume packages.



6. Don’t use fanciful fonts. Don’t unnecessarily use capitalized or bolded words, or grandiose phrases. Don’t send the letter without nixing silly spelling or grammatical mistakes.



7. Don’t use cliché language such as "As afore mentioned, I am enclosing…" This will only irritate the recruiter. Instead use simple phrases such as, "enclosed please find my resume."



8. Don’t include personal information like your race, sex or marital status in the cover letter. These things are against the Equal Employment Opportunity Act, and as such will not impact the decision whether or not you are called for the interview.



9. Don’t use copies of the same cover letters with just the address and date lines changed to send for similar jobs. If you don’t customize the entire body, the letter may either be irrelevant or a mistake may silently make it into the final draft.



10. Don’t brag or make statements that can't be quantified. You should be humble, yet accurate – employers these days often verify your statements for accuracy (and uncover exaggerations).



The trick with the cover letter is to capture the reader’s imagination as soon as they begin reading. This entails keeping your cover letter neat and tidy with a simple format, and avoiding common errors, such as the 10 listed above.

Lying About Yourself Again; A Look At Resumes

So often we find on resumes that people lie about their qualifications, abilities and where they attended college. Why do people lie on resumes? Is the competition so tough that they have to cheat or having they just been cheatings their way through school and in everything they do in life anyway and so what is a little white lie on top of a white piece of paper?



We see lies on resumes in the private sector as well as of the public sector. You would think that people would realize that eventually they will get caught, but instead they take the risk. Recently there was a person who was the head of Department of Homeland security computer department who lied about the school she went to and the degree she had earned. The degree she had was a piece of paper from a school, which she never attended, but did send them a check to get the diploma.



These diploma mills are part of the lack of integrity that we find on today's modern resumes. Now many corporations make lists of fake diploma mill schools and when they find them listed on a résumé that resume is discarded completely, without any further review. In fact there are computers now that do this. So, if you list a diploma mill school on your résumé you may as well not waste your time sending it to today's large corporations.



Lying about your self again? Why do you do it? Why do you cheat? Can’t you compete? Today's dishonesty on resumes is in direct proportion to the lack of integrity of our society and it is unacceptable. We find many employees complain about their employer, but how many employees lie on their résumés? Please consider this in 2006.

Do Not Fall In Love With Your Own Resume; You Might Have To Update It Someday

Many people have resumes bitter three to five years old and they never update them. Sometimes I wonder why so I asked one lady who is making copies of her résumé at the local Kinko's about her résumé and she said oh it is five years old I'm just running off copies. I almost started to laugh and then I gave her an inquisitive look. She smiled and said; what? I said; well, surely you've done something in the last five years haven't you?



She admitted that she had done quite a bit actually. But she did not want to look over qualified for the job she was going after and then I thought, well why not just downplay your credentials on your résumé and at least update it? She said she thought about that but she really likes this résumé because it looks so neat and it fits all on one page without looking too cluttered. It was a nice looking résumé I have to admit.



It had good use of white space, good font and it was crisp and clean just the kind of résumé that a human resource director might like. But I thought to myself I wonder what she is going to say when the human resource director asks her what she has been doing for the last five years?



I was not able to ask this young lady that question because she had made her copies it left the store. But I guarantee you that the human resource director will ask; what have you been doing for the last five years? Perhaps you will consider all this in 2006.

How Long Can I Consider a Job Offer?

A few weeks ago, a young man I was representing almost lost a job. He had interviewed with the firm on Thursday afternoon and received a job offer that day. He wanted to consider the offer until the close of business the following Friday . . . and almost lost the opportunity he ultimately accepted by insisting that he had “a right” to “consider it” until then.



From my client’s perspective, they understood that he was comparison shopping, had actually hired three people from the firm he was waiting for an offer from, were interviewing more people from there and didn’t want to risk losing everyone.



This situation offers an opportunity to examine how long you have to consider a job offer once you receive one.



The correct answer is that you have as long as they will give you.



Most firms would like an immediate or almost immediate response. I don’t mean an answer in 10 minutes. I mean an answer where you sleep on it. After all, in most cases, you’ve interviewed there several times, why haven’t you been thinking about it before now and able to make a decision?



And delaying for too long gives a message to the hiring firm of how you make decisions . . . or that you are shopping for another option . . . or just aren’t that interested.



The fact is everything you do on an interview is a reflection of you and how you will work with your new employer. A day to think is OK (truthfully, now, you’re not going to take a day off from work, sit in a chair in isolation and contemplate the job offer, are you), two days is often OK and more gives the employer reason to feel hesitant about you and your thought process.
